The Oval Ball

12th August 2013

On Monday 12th August I was privileged to attend Fleetwood RUFC and present, on behalf of all Mark brethren, 15 "tackle shields" for their summer school.

The Summer School runs throughout the summer holidays - every Monday / Wednesday and Friday mornings for selected age groups and every Sunday for all youngsters.

Now under the auspices of the official Rugby Football Union [whose Regional Development Officer was present].  The tackle shields were essential to comply with their requirements and to protect the children.  Without them the Summer School could not have taken place : and we received a very warm thank you from all the officials and children present.

David Buckingham, President of the Club / Carl Richards, MD of Raging Bull who made the kit / PGM / Colin Goodwin, Chairman of the Club / Chris Lowden, RFU Development Officer for West Lancs / Peter Dodd, who is running the Summer School [ably assisted by his two sons].

The Summer School has many children from disadvantaged households - parts of Fleetwood being quite deprived areas. It also teaches soccer and cricket.

Colin Goodwin, who is Chair of Fleetwood RUFC, is also President of Blackpool Masonic Hall at Adelaide Street - how he finds time for both I do not know; until 2009 he was also Chair of Fleetwood & Rossall Hospitals.

It was through Colin that we were able to make this donation and the Province is grateful to him for the generous acknowledgement of our support, by printing our logo so prominently on each item.

The warmth of the reception given to me and my family indicated the friendliness of the Summer School and the reason for its ongoing success.
